New LED Recessed by Lightolier

We have a new product in stock at Dominion Electric Supply that I wanted to tell you about:
Lightolier's Lytening LED recessed lights.
You can see the complete brochure here:  http://lightolier.com/MKABrochures/Lytening-LED_Bulletin.pdf

Right now we are stocking 2 trims:
1013CDL30K ~ clear diffuse, in 3000 Kelvin

1076WHL30K ~ white baffle, also in 3000 Kelvin

The Kelvin temperature tells you what the LED light looks like.  2700 Kelvin is associated with incandescent lights, and we call it "warm".  These at 3000 Kelvin will be just a bit "cooler", but they will still be perfectly suited for residential use.  In commercial spaces we usually see true "cool" light, which is 4100 or 5000 Kelvin.
The clear diffuse trim is a lightly brushed silver that is smooth.  The white baffle has ridges inside to help push the light out and reduce glare.
With either of these trim options, you will also need an LED housing:
1004ICLED housing
These can be dimmed with an Electronic Low Voltage dimmer.  They emit 650 lumens, which is roughly equivalent to a 65-watt incandescent reflector lamp.  Lightolier offers a 5-year warranty on this product, and they are Energy Star qualified.  Here is the link to all the details on their web site:  http://lightolier.com/products/index.jsp?CATREL_ID=37091&BLK=N&CAT_ID=36026

Vendor Spotlight ~ Elk Lighting

It's been a while since I've done a Vendor Spotlight post.... so today we feature Elk Lighting.  Elk has been very busy recently, buying up other manufacturers like Sterling Industries and Nulco Lighting.  You can see all of their lines on their web sites:
www.elklighting.com
http://www.dimondlighting.com
http://sterling.cameoez.com/

Their web site describes them as " a premier designer and importer of indoor and outdoor residential, designer and commercial lighting fixtures, decorative accessories and furniture. An award winning team of international designers and engineers ensure that each product is created with uncompromising detail and unparalleled design. The company founded in 1983 distributes over 5,000 products under ELK Lighting, Landmark Lighting, Sterling Industries, Baldinger, Dimond Lighting, Artistic Lighting, HGTV Home, Trump Home, Historic Royal Palaces, Biltmore Estates, and Mary Kate and Ashley brands. Products are available at a network of lighting and furniture showrooms, electrical wholesale distributors, department stores and specialty home improvement companies throughout the world."

We have a nice variety of their styles in all 3 of our showrooms.  Here is a sampling:

31014/6 ~ this has to be one of my favorite pieces in our Chantilly showroom

86053 ~ no one else makes anything quite like this one!

31225/6 ~ but they do simplicity quite nicely, too, don't you think?

5093/3 ~ they have one of the best selections of kids' lighting... or maybe this one is meant for the bigger kids?  :)

8091/3 ~ they also have a nice selection of feminine pieces like this white chandelier with pink flowers

9107/4+2 ~ this one hangs in our Arlington showroom... spectacular!

5052/2 ~ how about a train for the little or bigger kids?

12008/1 ~ another delicate one

White House Lantern

Happy 2013!
Linda Morley & I were both tickled to see this article in the Washington Post Metro section yesterday featuring the White House Lantern:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/edisons-bright-idea-lights-up-the-white-house/2013/01/05/8bfc8258-55ea-11e2-bf3e-76c0a789346f_story.html

I became "tuned in" to this particular lantern many years ago when I had a custom home client who wanted a fixture just like this for his own front porch.  I ended up getting one custom made by one of our vendors, and it was also a beauty.  I don't recall that it was quite this large, though ~ John Kelly says the original is 3' wide by 7' tall!
I even learned a thing or two about this lantern ~ most notably that they replaced the electric candelabra inside with an LED cluster in 2008, making it much more energy efficient.  I imagine they were getting tired of changing light bulbs that high up!  I also did not realize it had been hanging there since 1902 ~ amazing!

And another fun fact for you ~ the lantern is even depicted via Legos in their White House set!  (Yes, I have 2 young boys who love Legos, and yes, they have put this one together.)

Look closely ~ can you see it right there in the portico?
