Washington Post House Calls

Love today's House Calls (in the Local Living section of the Washington Post):

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/artsandliving/homeandgarden/features/house-calls/20100527/index-after.html/

If you go to the "after" drawing, you can click on the numbers to see details. Megan Blake of DC Design Co-op suggests this chandelier, which is actually made by our vendor Robert Abbey. Abbey calls it "Real Simple" ~ it's available in Gunmetal, Stardust White, Deep Bronze, or Matte Black, and our price is only $265 (+ tax & freight).

And then her lamp is also Robert Abbey ~ the "Jayne" ~ in oat glazed ceramic with an ascot white fabric drum shade. This lamp is 31" tall, and our price is $140 (+ tax & freight).

Megan ends by saying, "Interesting light fixtures with shades provide cozy lighting at night." They sure do!

Baltimore Decorators' Show House

Patty Jordan thought I should mention the Baltimore Show House. I must admit I don't know anything more about it than this, but it sure sounds great!

http://www.bsomusic.org/main.taf?p=1,16/

The Baltimore Symphony Associates present the 34th Symphony Decorators’ Show House, featuring the work of Maryland’s most prominent interior designers.

May 8-30, 2010
As the BSA’s largest fundraiser of the year, proceeds will support the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s education programs, impacting the lives of more than 70,000 children each year.

Show House Hours:

Closed Mondays
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday:
10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Thursday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Purchase the perfect gifts and quality additions to your home décor from among designer items displayed throughout the Show House and from the on-site boutique.

History of the Woodholme Estate:

Constructed in 1925 during prohibition, this Tudor-style home features two hidden liquor storage areas: a sliding
cabinet behind a bookcase and a wine cellar built into the dining room wall. The four bedroom, three and a
half bath home also features a library, a sun porch and an alchemist’s chamber.

To prepare this home for the more than 8,000 guests who annually attend the BSA’s popular fundraiser, 30 designers
decorate and furnish the estate’s 24 rooms. This year’s selection of award-winning interior designers includes
Maryland Chapter President of the American Society of Interior Designers Laura C. Kimball, Russell Slouck from
Gatehouse Interiors and Donna Melvin from Twin Diamond Studios, among others. One special wall even
includes a mural of the home’s history by Deborah E. Watson, Annapolis Interiors, Sur L'Avenue.

Baltimore Symphony Associates:

The Baltimore Symphony Associates (BSA) continues its long tradition of volunteers in service to the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra reaching back to 1942 when it began as the Women’s Committee. More than 400 current
members use their time, energy and financial support to benefit the education programs of the BSO. The BSA
manages the Symphony Store at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, hosts several fundraising events, serves
as ushers at education programs and sponsors several pre-concert lectures each session.

Tips for lighting a bathroom

Yesterday we listened in on a great webinar about bathroom lighting, sponsored by the American Lighting Association (ALA) and Besa Lighting. The speaker for their series is Joe Rey-Barreau, and he is full of wonderful info! One of the things he talked about was "layering" light in the bathroom. Hinkley Lighting talks about this on their website:

http://www.hinkleylighting.com/design-center/layering-light-in-the-bath.aspx/

This picture is from Hinkley's site ~ an interesting application shot.

The basics of the "layering" concept are to have more than one source of light. Joe suggests five:

  1. lighting for grooming
  2. general lighting
  3. lighting above showers & tubs
  4. accent lighting (e.g. artwork)
  5. decorative lighting

Kichler Lighting has some great tips on their website, too: http://www.kichler.com//consumer/help_page/portlet_help/cms/begin?portlet_helpresource=/OpenCMS/sites/kichler.com/help/Bath_and_Vanity_Lights.html/

Theirs match a lot of what Joe mentioned on the webinar yesterday ~ a vanity light (over the sink & mirror) should be mounted about 80" off the floor. If you are using a pair of sconces, they should be mounted 66" off the floor, and ideally 30-36" apart, if your space allows. You should avoid using recessed lighting exclusively at a vanity ~ it creates terrible shadows under the eyes and chin. I personally love to pair a low-voltage pinhole light over the sink with sconces or a vanity light. The pinhole light will accent the sink and hardware and make them pop, while the vanity light or sconces will light your face.

And don't forget a recessed light in the tub or shower. The technologies have developed nicely in the past few years, and we can now use low-voltage MR16 or line-voltage PAR lamps (both halogen) in wet locations, so again, you can achieve a great pop of bright light in these areas. And don't forget to put all your non-fluorescent lights on a dimmer! Dimmers will save energy and extend the life of your light bulbs tremendously.

Here are some great shots from Kichler's web site:

ALA Lighting Makeover Sweepstakes

Now I just got an email from Residential Lighting Magazine that talks about the latest sweepstakes from our American Lighting Association (ALA):
http://www.americanlightingassoc.com/sweepstakes.php/

As Residential Lighting says, "This time around, ALA is sharing the wealth a bit more. The $10,000 has been divided into four prize levels: $5,000, $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 — more chances to win, and the amounts are still meaningful." We had a winner in a similar contest from Hinkley Lighting, right here in our Chantilly store, so maybe we could be the lucky store for YOU this time! You can enter online, at the above link. Good Luck!!!

Light Concepts' new catalog

I just got an email with a neat link to an online catalog for Light Concepts. They say:
Light Concepts’ New Energy-Efficient Lighting Catalog
A flip tour of the 2010 catalog reveals products and applications, specs and details, proving energy-efficient lighting makes a stylish — and sustainable — statement.

Here is the link:

I think this one is my favorite ~ it's certainly not your grandmother's fluorescent light!
