Spring Sale Preview & Feiss OL2309DAN

Greg Tiedemann in our marketing department just sent me this preview copy of our upcoming Spring Sale. This will go out next week to our mailing & emailing list, but you can also print it out from this blog, bring it in, and get the special discount. And if you spend $150 or more, we have a FREE Philips SpotOn LED night light to give you! If you'd like to get onto either mailing list, please let Greg know at gtiede@dominionelectric.com ~ he'd love to add you.

As for today's red tag special, it's an outdoor-rated hanging lantern, a Murray Feiss OL2309DAN:

It's the picture on the left, but the sizing information is on the right. It's from their Lanesborough Collection and is a distressed antique nickel finish on die-cast aluminum. The size is 10" wide by 17" high, and it takes three 60-watt candelabra lamps. The original price was $216.90, now reduced down to $119. The glass is hand-blown fluted and seeded, which nicely reduces glare from the light bulbs. It would be beautiful in an entry or stairway, either indoors OR outdoors!

Happy Earth Day!

I've been thinking all day, Earth Day, that I should post about something "green".... But I do that so many other days with all my LED postings! We have over 200 items on red tag sale right now in our Chantilly store. I always start them at 30% off our regular prices (which are actually already discounted 40% off list/reference prices). Then if we still have them a few months later, I cut them more and more, so that's how some ending up being as much as 50% off our original prices. So there are some great deals here! Then our Spring Sale will be 15% off those regularly discounted prices, on everything in stock (excluding fans). But you don't have to wait till May 7th ~ just mention this blog, and we'll give you the discount now!

Aged & Burnished Brass

A few days ago, Cathleen Smith in my showroom suggested I do a post about the renewed trend in the darker brasses. Since then our guys have been hanging new product from Hinkley, and a lot of it is aged & burnished brass, so she must have had ESP! So here are some of the new pieces we just put up:

Washington Post D.C. Design 2009

Have you seen today's Washington Post? The Home section is featuring the D.C. Design House, and our Pat Stanley tells us she assisted with the lighting design in 3 of the rooms. The one shown here is David Mitchell's, with a gorgeous Corbett chandelier right in the middle. He also gives "A Designer's Tips for Beautiful Lighting", so I just have to share those here! They say "When it comes to recessed lighting, designer David Mitchell says less is more. "People tend to put too many recessed lights in a room, and it gets overwhelming," he says, "...and there are so many great hanging fixtures out there." His room in the D.C. Design House is a good example. To help homeowners, the designer offers his formula for the most beautiful way to light a standard-size room:
  • Install four recessed lights, one in each corner of the room, placing them 24" from the wall (not the molding) for an overall warm glow.
  • Hang a fixture in the center for ambient lighting and to provide a focal point.
  • Use a table or floor lamp for accent and task lighting.
  • Watch your wattage. If your lamp has a single bulb, use a 60-watt. If your lamp has two bulbs, use two 40-watts.
  • Have all lights on dimmers, even lamps."

Thanks, David ~ we couldn't agree more!

Architectural Digest May 2009

I had a chance to breeze through the May issue of Architectural Digest yesterday, and there are so many great things to share! First, there was an ad for Lutron that caught my eye: In the top right corner they say "save energy with Lutron", and it occurred to me that many people probably don't know how dimmers save energy, while also extending bulb life. Lutron offers this chart on all of their literature:
So changing bulbs to compact fluorescents isn't the only way to save energy. If you want to be able to control your light intensity, or you just love your old incandescent & halogen bulbs, think about changing your switch to a dimmer instead. I have them all over my house ~ the bathroom is my favorite place for them! Who wants to start their day with harsh 100% bright light when you can start it soft & dimmed instead?! Lutron also says this:
"ECO FACT - DID YOU KNOW??? If every home replaced one switch with a dimmer, it would be a net savings of 2241 million KWhrs/year. 1 KWhr produces 1.0 lb. CO2, so by eliminating 2241 million KWhrs/year, we would eliminate the production of 4.260 million lbs CO2. A typical car in the US produces 11,450 lbs CO2 per year... So we end up with the savings being equivalent to taking 370,000 cars off the road. PLUS THE DIMMER WILL PAY FOR ITSELF!"

The next thing in Architectural Digest that caught my eye was OUR ad & editorial, of course. Here is the editorial piece & picture:

That fixture we feature is made by Kalco. As usual, if you'd like more information about it, please let me know.

And then last, I just LOVE this new ad from Gulick Group ~ and I also supply all their lighting, so of course they are near & dear to me!

So that was a most fabulous issue, full of goodies, don't you think?!

Hadco LED landscape lighting

By now you have probably noticed how much I love LED lighting ~ it's all so new & exciting! One of my reps, Jan Zanger, just sent me a link to some of Hadco's new LED landscape products. Check it out at http://www.hadcoled.com/landscape_LED/home/. You can download spec sheets for their new LED Bullyte & LED Ingrade fixtures. Very nice! They also have a great explanation of what exactly LED light is. They say it is "a solid-state lighting component that does not utilize electrical filaments or gas. LED lighting is a paradigm shift in the outdoor lighting industry. The effect is a cool, energy-efficient and reliable light source that provides at least 70,000 hours of illumination without the need for lamp maintenance." They go on to explain it in great detail, but I won't type it all here! You can read more about it at http://www.hadcoled.com/LED_Basics/home/.

Energy Star

I spent this morning at the NVBIA "Future of Green Building" seminar. Even though we're not a builder, I want to make sure we're aware of the needs of our green builders, so I'm trying to stay informed!
Luckily, I think the lighting portion of a "green" house is fairly straight-forward. Dominion Electric Supply is an Energy Star partner, and a lot of our manufacturers make Energy Star labeled products, so we have access to plenty of products that meet the specifications. You can read more about our partnership on our website at http://www.dominionelectric.com/faq-es.htm The main reason I think we're lucky is that a lot of this green talk can be really confusing, but lighting is easier, because fixtures are either energy efficient (LED or compact fluorescent, basically!) or they are not (incandescent). And if the builder needs to have the official Energy Star rating, all of our catalogs clearly label their approved fixtures. Really, these are exciting times in our world, because the technologies are evolving so fast ~ we are constantly seeing new products, especially in LED. Stay tuned here ~ you know I'll be featuring them!

Seagull LED Technology

We had a nice meeting in Arlington today with Seagull Lighting. Spencer Bolgard, their VP of Sales, was in town to accept their fifth Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award for their ongoing commitment to the development of energy efficient products. While he was in town, he met with all of our showroom managers, our purchasing manager, and our director of branch sales. The most exciting thing (in my opinion!) is they have quite a few new LED products, including several decorative fixtures. I'm showing one page here from their new Energy Efficient catalog, but let me know if you'd like to see what else they have. There are 6 mini-pendants and 2 exterior families, as well as cove lighting and a surface mount downlight. I haven't seen any of it in person yet, but our rep Shara Freeman hopes to have her sample kit in a few weeks, so we should get to see some of it soon!
